Childhood obesity is a universal phenomenon. It is of an immense concern today. Childhood obesity, if not controlled at an early stage can lead to severe consequences later in life.
Children have more energy requirements than adults. Yet if they consume more calories than what they actually use, they put on weight. Therefore, they develop higher risk of inheriting diseases in the later stages of life. Obesity is the gateway to many diseases such as, high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease etc. Health problems increase with obesity on a rise.
Majority of children today, are obese because of their unhealthy eating habits. Munching fatty snacks while watching television is also responsible for childhood obesity. Since, children spend several hours sitting in front of the T.V or computer, they do not devote much time for any physical activity. Lack of exercises accumulates the fat in the body making a child obese. Genetic factors also determine the degree of obesity.
Awareness regarding childhood obesity among parents is a must. It is their duty to inculcate healthy eating habits within their children. Avoidance of fried food and sugar enriched carbonated drinks should be there. Supplement the meals with plenty of fruits and green leafy vegetables.
Encourage your children to walk down to school or the market, instead of simply jumping into the car. Motivate them to play games such as football, rugby, tennis etc. Indulgence of children in activities like gardening, skipping and cycling can also help to prevent obesity.
Realize the evils of obesity and do no let your children fall prey to it.
